I was wondering why players such as Lyth, Robson, Jennings, Ballance, have come into the test set up,done well initially, then faded away.

One reason could be exposure to the England's batting coach. Mark Ramprakash.

Great shout westside

Surely to god the size of the England set up we could go out and get the best possible.

For example, for test matches someone like Rahul Dravid

I'd imagine most batsmen have their own coaches or people they listen to.
There do seem to have been a number that have come in and gone out after some initial success but not sure that's different from what it ever was. Or any different from other countries
I think most batsmen get worked out a bit after bowlers have seen them and have to improve on the go or go away and work on things and come back.
There ARE examples of players who have come back stronger the second time.

Who are the coaches for the Englishmen who will be playing for Australia in the Ashes, Sven?

It's the same with NZ batsmen, only generally without the initial success bit.

Saw an article on Cricinfo a couple weeks back about Cook. Apparently he has his own coach (who he pays for himself) who's been helping him over the last couple years. Doesn't spend as much time with the England coaching staff, according to what they wrote.

I think this is evidence of the negative side of the county game over recent years coupled with a poor selection process. The bowlers these guys will face in CC games aren't challenging enough and if you only pick players based on averages and runs scored then you aren't doing yourself any favours.

Jennings is no where near a test standard opener... he just can't bat at this level.

Graham Hick is I think still the batting coach attached to the Australian Test team , EERIE

That said I think someone like Matt RENSHAW (like most players) would have his own coach.
I am not even sure Western Australia have a specialist batting coach so the other two would probably come under the eye of Head Coach Justin LANGER
Who ironically was one Test batsman who did go away after an initial period in the Test team and return a much better player.
Hope that helps

A former England batter coaching an Englishman to play in the Ashes against England.

Bet you feel glad to be alive?

Re: 4th Test England v South Africa at Old Trafford
I certainly do

I think it's fantastic that the young migrant kid is playing for Australia. Especially when some African stick insect is opening the batting for England.

Eerie Descent 3:55 Fri Aug 4
Re: 4th Test England v South Africa at Old Trafford
He won't be playing by then.

Will it be an Ashes first if/when there are 13 Englishmen on the field at the same time?

Re: 4th Test England v South Africa at Old Trafford
You expecting Stokes knee to have blown up again by then?

To be honest I think Renshaw is the only likely starter

Shows the poor state of English batting, that a player who is only averaging under 37 this series, is nailed on to be opening the batting, in the Ashes.

Lbw on an umpires call for 99
362 all out

I like the DRS system, but the umpire's call thing is a load of rubbish at times. Amazing how that can be given by the umpire, but Moeen's hat trick ball (which was plumb) wasn't.

Sven,

Can you tell me Jimmy Anderson's first ever wicket for England? That's in all forms of cricket.
